Dr. Dunkenstein!

Ever wonder why it is so rare these days to see a backboard break during an NBA or College Basketball game when someone slam dunks the basketball? Well, this could possibly be attributed to the thunderous dunks from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s of Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins, a former NBA great and ambassador. He broke so many backboards during his playing days, the NBA decided to reconstruct backboards so they wouldn’t shatter when a player slam dunked the basketball with great ferocity. Don’t believe it? Check out the video highlights of some of Dawkins’ most powerful dunks.

With this proof, the backboards at URJ Eisner and Crane Lake Camps better watch out this summer, because “Chocolate Thunder” is coming to visit! That’s right, during first session, campers and staff from both camps will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the former NBA great, as he conducts basketball clinics, signs autographs, tells stories of his playing days, talks about making good decisions and what it’s like to be a good role model, and he may even spend some time in the camp kitchen whipping up some of his specialties from his cookbook “Cooking with Thunder and Lightning.” All in all, this will be a visit none of the campers and staff will ever forget; spending time with an NBA Legend.
