Hi! My name is Candice and I am the Kitchen Manager at Crane Lake Camp this summer.
There are many meals on camp that I enjoy, but my personal favorite is meatballs. There are so many Crane Lake Camp meal hacks that I have seen so far at camp. For example, I have seen staff eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with hot sauce and peanut butter and banana sandwiches. My personal favorite meal hack at camp is deviled eggs using eggs off the salad bar. I would say the most popular dessert at camp is definitely churros. At home, I love making omelets with American cheese and broccoli. My all time favorite meal to eat is my mom’s homemade noodle soup.
During the year, I play in a competitive Frisbee league. I am looking forward to the CLC vs Eisner Frisbee game. I believe the outcome will be a goose egg – them with zero points and us with all the points. I hope to score three points in the game. I imagine the final play will be me throwing a hammer to Max in the end zone!
I decided to come to camp because I thought it would be a really great and interesting opportunity for me. I used to attend summer camp as a child and when Max reached out to me I thought it would be great to see camp from the other side, on staff, not as a camper.
I have worked in various kitchens as a prep cook and ran a small private kitchen and cooking school, but I have never worked in a camp environment. A mix of my event planning background and chef background have made this job right in my comfort zone.
It’s a really big challenge to feed so many people in one day. I’m really lucky that I have some really experienced chefs (especially Tzvika who has been at CLC for 8 years) and a great staff. We have been able to pull it off through trial and error, hard work, and lots of advice from people that have been here previous years. Without them it would’ve taken a bit longer to figure out how to do it.
I’ve been fortunate and active enough to have met a lot of great counselors and campers. I am looking forward to meeting more people through Toranut and the Machon program. I try to stay active with my staff and talk to as many campers and counselors as I can during meals. I love the community atmosphere and hope that it just keeps growing.
