The other day, lower camp had the opportunity to volunteer on Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York’s food farm. We drove for two hours and arrived at a 10-acre farm where people donate their food to the less fortunate. We discussed the work they do and how without the help of the volunteers, this farm would not be able to run successfully.

IMG_5743We were given a small tour and then were given three rows of lettuce to weed. It was completely overgrown with no lettuce in sight. After lots of hard work pulling out the weeds and discovering mice, frogs, and worms, we had cleared the three rows of lettuce. We saved the workers a lot of time prior to the lettuce picking in a few days.

All of the children were so proud of the work they had done during the time that they were there. Following the hard work, we sat down for lunch and discussed the work we had done and how it helps those in need.   By Emily Roberts

The other day, Chaverim traveled to the Regional Food Bank outside of Albany. This food bank supplies 23 counties with food to distribute at local pantries. The campers were able to go into this large, Cosco like, warehouse, and see the amount of food donated every week. The sheer volume of food was overwhelming and showed just how much need there is in our local communities. We worked on sorting cookies and crackers and then repackaging them for distribution. It was cool to see how we could get involved and actually make a difference.
