Summer camp. According to the dictionary summer camp is “a camp providing recreational and athletic facilities for children during the summer vacation period,” but behind the superficial meaning there is a deeper world of friendship, love, community and fun. This is my 3rd summer here at Crane Lake and from day one I’ve been discovering all the little things that make it so special and pull all the campers and counselors back another year.

On opening day of my first year I was nervous. The night before I had been thrilled but that morning was torture. I didn’t come until 10:30, so the whole morning was waiting and the more waiting the more time to think about all the possible problems. I came up with this story that camp looked fun but in fact one camper disappeared a week. But my first step into the bunk changed all that. Everyone was so welcoming and supportive the whole time. I made lasting friendships the first week and although there were times I missed home, I never ever had a moment of doubt or thought that I may not come home to the bubble. If you ask the dictionary, summer camp is lifeless and lacking emotion. But one look at this secure, beautiful world and a new door is open.
