This is the third installment of our “My Israel Story” series. All week, we’ll be sharing personal photos and stories from our staff about their connection to Israel in honor of Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) and Yom HaAtzmaut (Independence Day) on May 10-12. We look forward to sharing even more of our Israel stories and experiences this summer at camp!

“To me, Israel is more than a home, it’s a symbol. A symbol of freedom, the dream of our ancestors, a dream of the Jewish state. It’s a place where everyone can feel welcomed, a place of friendships, innovation, brotherhood, heroism and values that our country is based on.

My connection to Israel touches every aspect of my life, from serving in the Israeli Defense Forces to representing Israel in a Jewish community in New York City. Shahar armyServing in the army is a great honor, a big responsibility and a strong feeling of mission, the most important mission. As soldiers, we promise to do everything in our power to protect the state of Israel, even if it means to pay the ultimate price. This is how deep our connection to Israel is, connection to the land and to the people, being a part of something greater than the individual. My love for Israel was, is and will always be eternal.

To me, Israel is the ideal value.”
